PATIENT SERVICES
Patient Services

Research shows a positive link between health and the social support in our lives (David Spiegel,
Living Beyond Limits). This basic philosophy underlies the Myasthenia Gravis Foundation of
California's MG patient support system. We connect newly diagnosed patients with those who
through years of experience have learned to successfully manage their disease. Newly diagnosed
patients learn to cope with MG's physical and social challenges in an atmosphere of
encouragement, positive feedback, compassion, empathy and understanding.

If an MG patient does not live near an area with an existing MG support group, he or she can
take advantage of “Telephone Friends,” also called “Someone to Talk To.” This is a peer
mentoring service whereby newly diagnosed patients are paired with MG patient mentors who
have lived successfully with MG for a substantial period of time. Communication is via the
telephone and/or the Internet.

To find “Someone To Talk To,” call the Myasthenia Gravis Foundation of California at  (800)

Drug Bank

MG patients frequently take costly medications in order to keep their symptoms in check. In
many cases, their health insurance does not cover the cost of these drugs.

Through our Drug Bank Program, MGFC is able to offer patients the chance to purchase life-
saving MG medications at low cost. Because grant funds are received to subsidize this program,
the Drug Bank is restricted to MG patients residing in California and Nevada. The Drug Bank
operates as a mail order service. Because medications are only shipped once a week from Haig
Pharmacy, it is suggested patients keep an ample supply of medications on hand (3-4 weeks).

To request a Drug Bank Application form, call the Myasthenia Gravis Foundation of California
at  (800) 574-7884  (800) 574-7884  or  (323) 887-0056  (323) 887-0056  or email:

Physician Referral

Occasionally, MG patients seek a new neurologist to provide ongoing care or wish to consult
another neurologist for a second opinion. The Myasthenia Gravis Foundation of California
maintains physician referral lists for many areas throughout California and Nevada.

These lists are comprised of physicians who have cared for MG patients in their medical
practice. The Myasthenia Gravis Foundation of California cannot verify a neurologist's medical
expertise in treating MG.  It is the Foundation's policy to suggest several physicians rather than
one specific individual.
